How to Treat a Stye?

A stye is nothing but a bacterial infection in the eye and a really painful one. A stye can happen anytime and to anyone, if proper hygiene and cleanliness of the eye are not maintained. That painful and pus filled infection many times leaves us with either a bandage on the eye or a tinted pair of glasses to protect it. It also leaves us to stay indoors most of the time as the dust and dirt only aggravate the infection and can make it really worse. Though it is definitely possible to treat a stye with the help of a doctor, if some home remedies are adopted it will help you to treat a stye.

What is a Stye?

A sty is also called as hordeolum in medical terms. It is nothing but an acute infection of the oil glands of the eye which results in a fat, red, firm lump on the eyelid. A stye normally happens when dirt, dust or bacteria’s block the oil glands of the eye and that leads to an infection. Many times a stye, also leads to a lot of other styes that can happen in cycles anywhere on the body though this is not definite with everyone. Proper care and treatment at the onset of a stye can, however, treat a stye within one or two days itself.

Common symptoms of a Stye:

  • Sensitivity
  • Redness
  • Swelling of the eyelid.
  • Burning sensation in the eye.
  • Increased sensitivity to light.
  • Discomfort when blinking.

How to Treat a Stye

В Natural Remedies to Treat a Stye:

After the initial one or two days it becomes a painful pus filled stye and in many cases, it has taken up to two weeks for a stye to get treated completely. However, some simple home remedies are there to help you:

Cloves

Cloves are really rich in antibacterial properties which make them ideal for treating infections and getting rid of the swelling and redness really fast. To use cloves, just soak 50-6 cloves in a glass of water and take them out after 10 minutes. Now soak a soft piece of cloth in this water and squeeze out the excess water. Put the cloth on the stye and let it be there for at least 10 minutes. Do this two or three times for at least 4-5 days to treat a stye.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a natural antiseptic and has been used since ages to heal infections and get rid of them. It works like magic in treating a stye here. Just add one tablespoon of turmeric to two cups of water and let it boil. Boil it till it is reduced to half. Then cool it down and strain through a muslin cloth. Use this mixture to wash the eye two or three times a day. Along with this, you can also drink turmeric milk one or two times a day to make the healing faster.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera soothes the skin and helps to heal it really fast. It also has excellent anti-inflammatory properties and antibacterial properties that help in reducing the swelling and redness of the stye as well. To benefit from Aloe Vera, take a natural leaf and cut it open to take out the gel. Apply the gel and rub it over the eyelid and then leave it there for the next 20 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water. Do this a few times every day for the next few days. Notice the relief Aloe Vera provides to the eyes and how it helps you treat a stye quickly and effectively.

Potato

Potato has natural astringent properties that help in reducing the inflammation, pain contracting the tissues and reducing skin irritations. To benefit from a potato, take half a potato and grate it finely. Now put the grated pieces in a piece of cheesecloth and put the cheesecloth on the stye. Leave it for about 10 minutes. Do this two-three times a day for at least 4-5 days; notice how it helps in treating a stye really fast.

Calendula

Take a tablespoon of calendula leaves and put them in 250 ml of water. Let it sit for 10 minutes. Then put a muslin cloth in it and soak it for 5 minutes. Squeeze the excess water and apply the cloth over both the eyelids for some time. Do this twice a day for the next 5 days at least. It will really help you in treating the stye really fast and help your skin heal off naturally. Calendula is widely used for this purpose all over the world and is highly recommended by doctors as well as the best natural remedy.

Guava Leaves

Guava leaves have excellent anti-inflammatory properties that really help in getting rid of the swelling and redness and providing relief against the stye. To use guava leaves just take two or three guava leaves and wash them in warm Water. Now take a soft cloth and soak it in warm water for 5 minutes, squeeze out the excess water and take it out. Put the guava leaves in the warm cloth and soak them well, for at least 10 minutes. Now take out the leaf and leave it on the stye. Do this at least 2-3 times a day for the next 4-5 days to treat a stye really fast.

Egg

Eggs work really fast for treating a stye and providing comfort to the painful eye. To benefit from a stye, just beat the white of an egg. Beat whit it really well, so that its elements mix finely. Now take a soft, clean fabric and soak it in the egg white. Apply the soaked fabric on the eye and let it sit there for at least 15 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water. Do this at least twice daily to treat a stye at the earliest. You can continue to do this treatment till the stye gets treated completely. Eggs also make the eyes shine and glow and help in removing the tiredness from the eyes really well.

Mint

Mint leaves have been sued since ages for a lot of skin infections. Mint has excellent antioxidant and antiseptic properties which make it a natural medicine to treat practically any skin ailment or infection. To benefit from mint, take few fresh mint leaves and wash them well. Now crush them and make a fine paste out of them. Take a soft cloth or a cotton ball and soak it well in the crushed mint leaves and the juice and apply it to the infected eye. Do it at least thrice a day every day till you get rid of the infection. This is one of the best methods to treat a stye naturally.

Acacia Leaf

Acacia help in providing a lot of relief against the inflammation, pain and the itchiness really well. To benefit from acacia leaves, just take some boiling water in a cup. Add a few acacia leaves in it and let it steep for at least 10 minutes, now soak a clean fabric or a cotton ball in it and apply it over the infected eye. Let the solution sit on the eye for at least 15 minutes. You can wash off the eye with some lukewarm water after that. Do it at least twice daily to treat a stye. This is wonderful and safe remedy to treat a stye and provides a lot of relief from the pain.

Coriander Seed Wash

Coriander seeds have a natural cooling property and help to provide a lot of relief against the swelling and the pain in the eye. To benefit from coriander seeds, take some water in a saucepan and put it for boiling. Now add at least a tablespoon of coriander seeds to it and let it boil for 15 minutes. After this simmer for at least 15-20 minutes and then take the saucepan off the heat. Let them steep in the water for another 30 minutes till the water cools down. Strain the solution and then soak a fabric or a cotton ball in it to apply it to the eye. Coriander works really well in treating a stye instantly.

Spinach

Boil some water and then adds a few spinach leaves to it, let them boil for 10 minutes and then simmer for at least 20 minutes. Let the water cool down, and then apply this solution with the help of a cotton ball or a soft fabric to the eye. Let it sit on the eye at least for 15 minutes, Rehash several times a day for maximum relief and treating a stye really fast. Spinach has long been used as an effective remedy to treat a stye and if used at the onset itself, it helps to settle the stye in a day itself.

Chamomile

Chamomile works really well in getting rid of the swelling and the inflammation almost instantly. It also helps to kill the bacterial infection and help in treating a stye quickly. To benefit from a stye, take some chamomile, about 20 gms of it and add it to a liter of water. Also, add 10gms of thyme and 10gms of horsetail to it. Boil for 10 minutes and the cover and let it cool. Take a cotton fabric or a cotton ball, soak it in this solution and apply to the infected eye. Let this solution sit on the eye for at least 20 minutes. Rehash at least 3 times a day for maximum benefit.

Precautions to Treat a Stye:

  • Apart from the above remedies, it is essential to take a few precautions to prevent that stye from appearing on the eye:
  • Always wash your towels and well. Use a sterilizing liquid if possible in the last rinse. Never wipe your face with a dirty towel at any cost.
  • Keep your contact lens clean at all times. Use new ones after the old ones have expired. Always clean them nicely before putting them on taking them off after wearing.
  • Before touching your face always clean your hands. Never use those fingers in the eyes if they are dirty.
  • Wash your eyes and eyelids well whenever you wash your face. Splash good amount of water in them to take all the dirt and dust out and keep them bacteria free.
