 What do you do when you see those nasty little annoying flies enter your kitchen? They just seem to us bother us with everything they sit on – milk, fruits, snacks just about everything. And we are always left wondering how to get rid of them because they happen to be in our kitchens where we don’t intend to use any harmful substance. Well, these flies are not just common in your home, but they are commonly seen in restaurants, markets, etc. as well and especially in the summer season. Fruit Flies: Know A Little More

Fruit flies are mostly only attracted to fruits and vegetables. They can of course feed on those fruits and vegetables and happen to infest them if they are not made to fly away from your homes. These fruit flies are also known as Drosophila melanogaster. They are usually 3mm to 4 mm long, have red eyes and are mostly brown or tan in color. These fruits flies and known to eat ripened fruits and vegetables or other fermentation products. They definitely continue to multiply if nothing is done to kill them or control their presence in your house.

  • The best sign of an infestation is the existence of adult flies and pupae.

Remove All Breeding Ground

Clean the kitchen first and foremost and clean it really well. Get rid of all those ripened and infested fruits and vegetables. Clean all those dirty dishes, plates and bowls immediately. If any cut fruits are there in the kitchen, it’s best to cover them and put them in the fridge. Check those cupboards and drawers as well as the kitchen. These fruit flies tend to pile on those open grain packets or any wet grains, lentil, etc. that they might see in your cupboards. Remove All Other Breeding Ground

Once that kitchen has been cleaned, it’s time to repair all those things up that let those fruit flies in your house. If you keep trash cans outside your house, get rid of them altogether or keep it a few yards away from your house. Get rid of any compost piles as well if they exist. Or make sure to keep them covered at all times to prevent those flies. Keep all those windows and doors close at all times and repair those cracks as well if there are any. This will really help in preventing those flies from coming in your house.

Proper Storage

Once you have cleaned your kitchen thoroughly and taken all the preventive measure it’s time to get better storage options for all our grains, pasta, lentils, crackers, biscuits, etc. Never keep those open packets in your cupboards as they become breeding grounds for these flies. Get enough containers from the market and that too which have a tight rubber lid on top. Stack and keep away every open food items in these containers and store them in the cupboards.

Vinegar Trap

This vinegar trap works really well in killing fruit flies in your kitchen really fast. Take a glass bowl and pour apple cider vinegar into it. Add a few drops of dish washing soap as well. Now, cover the jar with a plastic wrap and poke holes into it with the help of a sharp item. Keep the jar in the place where these flies pile in most in your kitchen. This solution will help attract the flies and once they go into the jar, they won’t be able to come out of it. The dish washing soap helps to kill fruit flies almost instantly. Once you find many flies lying dead inside clean the jars and repeat the process again until all the flies are gone.

Low Tech Fruit Method

Now this is one method that works really well to kill fruit flies in your kitchen. Just take any fruit and cut it into small chunks. Now stick all these chunks in a bowl that has a lid on top. Once the fruit flies come and start feeding on the fruit, take that lid and slam it on the top and close the bowl. Fruit flies are slow in movements and you should be able to put that lid instantly when they come to feed on the fruits. This is a great method to kill fruit flies.

Red Wine

Those fruit flies are attracted to the smell of red wine and it will help kill them instantly. Take ВЅ cup of red wine and mix it in 1 ВЅ cup of water. Now put the solution in a jar and wrap a plastic cover on it. Prick holes in the plastic wrap and keep it in a place where you find most of the flies in your kitchen. The flies will be attracted to the smell of the solution and it will help kill them in some time.

Lemongrass Oil

The smell of the lemongrass oil is toxic to these fruit flies. However, lemongrass oil will not help to kill fruit flies. It can be used as a preventive measure to keep those fruit flies at bay. To use it, just take about two cups of hot water and pour it into a spray bottle. Now add 10-15 drops of lemongrass essential oil to it. Use this spray to spray all the corners of your house or wherever you think those flies may pile on. Do this once daily to prevent fruit flies.

Vegetable Oil

Vegetable oil is every useful to kill fruit flies that happen to come from that drain in your sink. To use it, just pour about Вј cups of vegetable oil in the drainage. Now use a tape to cover the holes of the drainage and leave it overnight. In the morning, remove the tape and notice how the flies will stick to it and eventually die getting suffocated with that solution. Do it every night for a few days till you are able to kill fruit flies completely.

Honey

Honey helps attract those fruit flies and the sticky nature of honey helps to trap them instantly and kill them. To benefit from honey, just take a bright colored index card and stick a toothpick to one side of the card. Put seem honey on the other side of the card and keep the card in an area where you find most of those fruit flies. You can also keep in it that small plant where they pile on in the kitchen. Notice how honey helps to kill all the fruit flies in your kitchen in a few days time.

Bleach

Bleach is a very good option to kill fruit flies which come from the drain in your kitchen sink. To use bleach, just take one cup of the bleach and pour it into the drain of your sink. Cover your eyes and mouth with a plastic and now pour a little hot water into the drain. Do this every day till you kill all the fruit flies in the drainage. Take precaution since bleach is a very strong agent.

All the above methods will help kill fruit flies in a few days time provided you get rid of the things in your kitchen and in your home that they may feed on. Keep your house and kitchen in good hygienic condition at all times and never ever let the garbage pile up. Keep the garbage can covered as well always.
