How to Catch Fruit Flies? (Get Rid of Fruit Flies)

However, calling pest control, services is not the only option to eliminate these flies, some natural remedies also work really well to catch fruit flies and to make them go away from your house. What you need is just a little patience and determination while trying to make them go away from your home.

Fruit flies are mostly only attracted to fruits and vegetables. They can of course feed on those fruits and vegetables and happen to infest them if they are not made to fly away from your homes. These fruit flies are also known as Drosophila melanogaster. They are usually 3 mm to 4 mm long, have red eyes and are mostly brown or tan in color. These fruits flies and known to eat ripened fruits and vegetables or other fermentation products. They definitely continue to multiply if nothing is done to kill them or control their presence in your house.

How to you identify an infestation by fruit flies:

The best sign of an infestation is the existence of adult flies and pupae.

  • Adult flies are mostly seen flying over the trash cans and those fruits and vegetables in the kitchen.
  • The mature larvae of the fruit flies are called the pupae.
  • They normally happen to populate in a nearby dry spot.
  • Sometimes these droppings can be mistaken with those of a cockroach or other rodents.

Ways to Catch Fruit Flies:

The below remedies work really well to catch fruit flies and to make them go away from your house. However, take precautions while using them:

UV Light Bug Zapper

There are a lot of bug zappers available in the market, which emits these strong UV light that helps in trapping the gnats and killing them. Use one which suits your pocket and solves the purpose. Use it once or twice every day in your garden, kitchen and other areas infested by gnats. Over the days, you will start seeing them reduce in numbers and eventually they will go away completely from your house. This is a good method to catch fruit flies and get rid of them.

Soda Bottle

Soda Bottles are a good way to catch fruit flies and to make them go away completely. Just cut the top of a soda bottle and seal the opened side with the help of a plastic or something. Make a few holes in the plastic with the help of a sharp object for the gnats to enter the soda bottle. Leave it in the area where they pile up mostly in the kitchen or the house and notice within some time how gnats get trapped in the bottle. A soda bottle works like a funnel and the funnel allows the fruit flies to enter the bottle and get trapped.

Remove All Breeding Ground

Clean the kitchen first and foremost and clean it really well. Get rid of all those ripened and infested fruits and vegetables. Clean all those dirty dishes, plates and bowls immediately. If any cut fruits are there in the kitchen, it’s best to cover them and put them in the fridge. Check those cupboards and drawers as well as in the kitchen. These fruit flies tend to pile on those open grain packets or any wet grains, lentil, etc. that they might see in your cupboards. Remove All Other Breeding Ground

Wash that drainage in your sink and also clean it thoroughly down under. Always make sure those dirty plates and bowls never piled up in your sink as they are the first breeding ground of these fruit flies. Clean that drainage pipe in the sink thoroughly. Take all the rubbish out of it and any other rotten food material. Check under the stove and oven as well. Clean these thoroughly with soap to remove all the dirt. Check the seal of the fried and freezer doors as well and any drips under the sinks or rotten wood.

Get that garbage out and get those plants out from the kitchen as well. Do this to prevent and catch fruit flies the fastest way, as there will be nothing in your kitchen for them to feed.

Exclusion Measures

Once that kitchen has been cleaned, it’s time to repair all those things up that let those fruit flies in your house. If you keep trash cans outside your house, get rid of them altogether or keep it a few yards away from your house. Get rid of any compost pile as well if they exist. Or make sure to keep them covered at all times to prevent those flies. Keep all those windows and doors close at all times and repair those cracks as well if there are any. This will really help in preventing those flies from coming into your house and will also help to catch fruit flies quickly if they exist in your house.

Proper Storage

Once you have cleaned your kitchen thoroughly and taken all the preventive measure it’s time to get good storage options for all our grains, pasta, lentils, crackers, biscuits etc. Never keep those open packets in your cupboards as they become breeding grounds for these flies. Get enough containers from the market and that too which have a tight rubber lid on top. Stack and keep away every open food items in these containers and store them in the cupboards. Low Tech Fruit Method

Now this is one method that works really well to catch fruit flies faster in your kitchen. Just take any fruit and cut it into small chunks. Now stick all these chunks in a bowl that has a lid on top. Once the fruit flies come and start feeding on the fruit, take that lid and slam it on the top and close the bowl. Fruit flies are slow in movements and you should be able to put that lid instantly when they come to feed on the fruits. This is a great method for catching fruit flies.

Lemongrass Oil

The smell of the lemongrass oil is toxic to these fruit flies and therefore it works really well for catching fruit flies really quickly. It can be used as a preventive measure to keep those fruit flies at bay. To use it, just take about two cups of hot water and pour it into a spray bottle. Now add 10-15 drops of lemongrass essential oil to it. Use this spray to spray all the corners of your house or wherever you think those flies may pile on. Do this once daily to prevent fruit flies.

Alcohol

Alcohol acts as a powerful remedy to catch fruit flies quickly. You can take a little alcohol and dilute it with equal parts of water. Now use this water to spray it in all the areas infested by gnats. Do this daily at least once and keep doing it till you get rid of those gnats completely from your house. With regular application, you should be able to catch all fruit flies in a period of about 10 days.

Apple Cider Vinegar

This vinegar trap works really well in killing gnats in your kitchen really fast. Take a glass bowl and pour apple cider vinegar into it. Add a few drops of dishwashing soap as well. Now, cover the jar with a plastic wrap and poke holes into it with the help of a sharp item. Keep the jar in the place where these gnats pile in most in your kitchen. This solution will help attract the gnats and once they go into the jar, they won’t be able to come out of it.The dishwashing soap helps to catch fruit flies almost instantly. Once you find many of them lying dead inside clean the jars and repeat the process again until all the gnats are gone.

Egg Bait

This method works immensely well in catching fruit flies really fast. Take a 1-gallon container and break four eggs into it and fill it up with water. Mix the solution well and now takes four one liter bottles and pour this solution into each of them. Fill the bottles till Вј of them are covered with this solution. Refrigerate the rest of the solution and keep it safely in the fridge.

Now hang these bottles 3-5 feet from the ground in your garden area. Let them stay there every day. Notice the bottles every week. You will find lots of gnats in them. Change the bottles every 15 days and see how in a few days you catch fruit flies effectively

Olive Oil

Normally gnats tend to feed a lot in the drains of your sink and other places where there is dampness. To use olive oil juts takes a cup of the oil and pour into the drain in the night. Avoid washing anything in the sink after this. Let the oil be there overnight. Do this daily at a stretch of about 10 days. You will notice the reduction in the number of gnats in your house and will eventually be able to catch all fruit flies in a few days.

Honey

Honey helps attract those fruit flies and the sticky nature of honey helps to trap them instantly and kill them. To benefit from honey, just take a brightly colored index card and stick a toothpick to one side of the card. Put seem honey on the other side of the card and keep the card in an area where you find most of those fruit flies. You can also keep in it that small plant where they pile on in the kitchen. Notice how honey helps in catching fruit flies in your kitchen in a few days time.

Preventions:

It is very important to take the below measures to prevent flies in your house:

  • Keep your dustbin covered at all times with a tight lid.
  • Get rid of all the garbage in your house in the night time. Don’t let it be there till the morning.
  • Never keep cut fruits or other food items in the open for too long. Cover them or put in the fridge.
  • Whenever you buy watermelons and bananas, always wash them and then store them.
  • These flies tend to pile most of these fruits.
